Job Summary: The following is the swing shift custodial job description, it is given here as an example. Most substitute custodial work occurs on swing shift. Substitutes are called out by the substitute call-out system and locations of assignments vary upon need. Responsibilities include mopping and vacuuming floors, operating scrubbing and polishing equipment, cleaning and sanitizing rest rooms, and replenishing supplies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Sweeps and mops floors; strips and waxes floors periodically per schedule.
- Vacuums and periodically shampoos carpets.
- Straightens furniture in classrooms and offices; dusts flat surfaces; washes walls, desks, and windows as needed.
- Picks up waste papers; empties trash containers.
- If applicable, picks up litter and clothes in school locker rooms; sweeps and mops locker rooms and gymnasium floors.
- Sets up lunchroom tables and chairs as assigned; cleans and puts away tables after lunch and stacks chairs.
- Cleans rest rooms; sweeps and mops floors and empties trash. Washes mirrors and walls as needed. Scrubs and sanitizes sinks, toilets, and urinals. Replaces supplies and dispensers such as toilet paper and soap.
- Cleans whiteboards, trays and erasers; empties pencil sharpeners if assigned to a school building.
- Maintains current knowledge of school firefighting equipment; maintains equipment at proper operating conditions; reports fires and obtains emergency help.
- Performs minor repairs: repairs doors, tapes broken windows, replaces light bulbs, and paints surfaces.
- Communicates with staff and/or students during shift; responds to requests for repair, moving of furniture or supplies, or cleaning. Sets up tables, chairs, and other equipment for special events.
- Ensures that doors and windows are locked and building is secured before and after hours; checks that persons entering the building after hours are authorized visitors.
- Uses cleaners, disinfectants, and finishes according to product directions.
- Ensures that surrounding sidewalks and driveways are kept free of glass or other debris. Weeds gardens around building perimeter.
- Assists with after-school or evening activities as assigned; patrols building and parking areas; directs drivers to parking spaces.
- Provides backup assistance in covering for absent custodial employees; cleans and maintains designated areas as needed.
- Conducts thorough cleaning in summer; removes furniture from rooms and thoroughly cleans walls, carpets, and equipment. Washes furniture and windows; cleans, strips, and waxes floors; makes minor repairs, dusts lights.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience:
- High school graduation or equivalent or demonstrated strong skill in reading, writing and communication.
- Custodial experience preferred.
- Prefer candidates with experience in general light trades areas such as carpentry, painting, plumbing or electrical.

- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and students.
- Ability to work at extended heights.
Licenses/Special Requirements:
- May be required to obtain training in CPR and maintain First Aid certification.
- When employed, or as soon after hire as possible, employee must complete a safety awareness training program.
